YES! Summer Boot Camp 2016

Every summer since the inception of the YES! program, a 5 week bootcamp is held for a select amount of students whom are interested in being trained to become Peer Educators at their home schools during the upcoming year. Selected students receive a stipend which is performance based and service learning hours. The mission of the summer bootcamp is to expose students to diverse experiences that will allow them to develop: Professionally, Mentally and Spiritually. This was achieved through focusing on our 4 elements of YES! which is Pregnancy Prevention, Nutrition, Fitness and Violence Prevention.

This years summer sessions were held at Josephinum Academy and we had a total of 10 students ranging from upcoming sophomores to newly graduated seniors from our four partnered schools: Perdro Albizu Campos, Westown Academy, Wells Community Academy and Josephinum Academy. In addition to being trained, students were put into smaller groups and asked to research an Advocacy Project related to their community and offer a solution. This was presented for community members on the last week of the program, in which the students also cooked a healthy lunch. Many of our students felt that the program was too short and that they gained so many skills over the course of 5 weeks. They are all eager to get into the classroom this fall and continue being leaders for their peers.
